Agentic coding won't democratize design. It will separate it

For years, the "unicorn designer" was whoever could code. That was the line between influence and implementation.

Now that line is moving.

Everyone has access to tools that generate interfaces. The output looks designed. And people are calling this the democratization of design.

It's not.

What it actually does: raises the floor for everyone, and raises the ceiling for designers who know what they're doing. The delta between good design and whatever-the-tool-outputs is about to get much harder to ignore.

The new unicorn isn't a designer who can code. It's a designer who can work inside agentic systems, who understands the orchestration layer, who prototypes with real behavior, who closes the loop instead of handing off.

The tools didn't lower the bar for great design. They just made the bar visible.
